We
decided to stay closer to home today and explore Murter Island. The weather
looked set fair with no sign of yesterday’s rain. It stayed fine all day with temperatures
in the low 20s.
After
a cruisey start we drove into Murter town, parked Smarty and set off to
explore. We took a while wandering along the jetties in the town’s marinas
which were home to an impressive collection of boats. Jane wasn’t particularly
struck by the boats but we balanced the ledger by visiting the collection of
market stalls set up by the town’s square.
Murter Being Invaded? |
From
the square we walked through some of the town’s back streets, returning along
the edge of the harbour. Near the end of our walk we came across a red
‘semisubmarine’ moored alongside a quay. A board advertised tours, for 55 Kuna
each we could have a tour of approximately 30 minutes later in the day.
Photographs on the board showed a cabin lined with portholes. While the boat looked
like a small submarine complete with a conning tower and dive planes, it was evident
the boat didn’t dive, in effect it was a glorified glass bottomed boat with
portholes below the water line replacing a glass bottom. We decided not to rush
back later and take a tour.
Semi-Submarine |
From
Murter town we drove to the nearby town of Betina on the east side of the
island. It looked like a scaled down Murter town and we decided not to stop. We
cut across to the west side of the island to the town of Jezera where we thought we would find somewhere to eat lunch. There we walked around the harbour
without finding anywhere we wanted to eat. But then we found a flyer for a
restaurant that seemed to be just what we were looking for. Unfortunately, the
flyer gave no clue as to where the restaurant was situated. We spent quite a
while looking for the place but without any luck.
Teenage Boys Hooning Around Jezera Harbour |
We
gave up on Jezera and drove to Tisno where we were sure there would be
somewhere suitable for lunch. There wasn’t! We decided to return to Murter and eat
there. On the way we stopped at two supermarkets to buy chicken for a curry for
tomorrow’s dinner without any luck. It was turning into a disappointing day for
food.
Turning
into the quayside car park in Murter we spotted a Tommys supermarket where we
found the chicken we were after.
We
took a table outside one of the restaurants in the square where we ordered a
starter of the local speciality of pršut – home cured ham made from the hind
legs of pigs. The meat is washed, salted and then flattened under rocks before
being hung outdoors to be dried out and then indoors to mature. The whole
process takes a year, pršut from Dalmatia is smoked while that from Istria
isn’t. Ours was smoked and was served with black olives. It was very tasty. For
mains we both ordered sea bass, Jane chose a butter sauce while I had a white
wine sauce. Both dishes were excellent.
My Sea Bass |
Every
now and again a group of men seated outside a nearby bar would burst into song.
They were very good and we assumed they must be a choir.
Back
at Mabel I cooked a Chicken Tikka Masala curry to eat tomorrow on the basis
that I think a curry always tastes better if it’s left to stand a while.
It
was a balmy evening and I set up our large table outside as its large area is
much better for bananagrams allowing a lot more scope for rearranging tiles
than the small circular table indoors. We won a game each. Our attempts at the
trivia quiz could best be rated as very average with scores ranging from 4 to
12.
