Immediately after
breakfast at Phil and Kerry’s I resumed my quest to get insurance cover for
Mabel. In my view anything is insurable, the risk can be assessed and a
suitable premium determined. I therefore tried a Birmingham based insurance
broker specialising in motor vehicle insurance. Surely they would be able to
provide the cover we needed. I was wrong, in fact they had temporarily
suspended issuing motor insurance policies!
So, it was back to Down
Under Insurance where the agent I spoke to was adamant they wouldn’t cover
Mabel. I didn’t accept that and persisted with my approach that there had to be
a way forward. I managed to maintain my cool even though I was told I should
have checked out the limit of cover before buying Mabel. My response that I didn’t
think I should have to – they provided cover for Myrtle and Smarty for two
years and I had a good claims history. While that didn’t exactly break the
impasse, there was some thawing of the ice and I was asked to forward a copy of
the invoice for Mabel and they would see what they could do. The rest of the
morning was spent crafting an email setting out all the reasons for providing
the cover required, offering to underwrite the difference between the level of
cover they could provide and Mabel’s value and requesting a meeting with
insurers to achieve some resolution. All our fingers and toes were crossed as I
hit the “Send” button feeling we were on a knife edge.
After a light lunch we
set off in Smarty to Hednesford, near Cannock to visit Shane and Marie with
whom Jane used to work when she was with Birmingham Social Services. Our SatNav
had a blond moment when in spite of us declining a route involving a toll road,
we found ourselves on the M6 Toll motorway and £4 poorer.
Shane and Marie are both
real ale fans and I wasn’t disappointed when they took us to dinner at the
Uxbidge Arms pub where three pints of very good beer accompanied my steak and
kidney pie. Jane isn't a beer drinker and opted for red wine to accompany a curry.

Back in Hednesford we
chatted for a while and consumed some more beer and wine before heading off to
bed.
