Day 56: Tuesday 12 May - Charlbury and Gloucester, by Ken

We wanted to check everything was working properly on Mabel and learn about any idiosyncrasies during our two days away before we set off on serious driving.  Yesterday we learnt we had to keep on eye out for water overflowing from somewhere underneath while filling her fresh water tank.  One other thing that needed checking was emptying her toilet cassette. While it’s not a job I relish it has to be done and the red warning light on the toilet showed it needed doing.

The operation is straightforward and clean. The cassette pulls out from its locker via an external hatch. The cassette has wheels and a pull out handle, just like a suitcase, to transport it to a disposal point. Once there it is emptied via a spout with a removable cap. All that went smoothly, but when I put the cassette back in Mabel the indicator lights showed it was full. I couldn’t see how the lights connected to the cassette so just made a note that it was something for Elite to have a look at.

Having said goodbye to Robin and Vivian and arranged to meet them in New Zealand next year we packed up and set off for the Cotswold View Camping Ground near Charlbury, less than 25km from Moreton in Marsh. The site had been recommended by Phil who had stayed there a number of times. Jane drove – her first time in charge of Mabel and was very happy with the way it all went. The camp site is lovely, set on a hill commanding good views over the rolling Cotswold hills. In complete contrast to Moreton-In Marsh it was practically deserted with just a few caravans dotted around. Later in the day we found that most of them were unoccupied – like Sue and Richard the owners park them there for the summer and visit as and when.

The weather was poor – overcast with rain at times. After our usual lunch we decided to take Smarty to a caravan and motorhome dealer in Gloucester to get the few items we still needed before setting off, in particular a mat to go under the awning. The weather had picked up by the time we got back to Mabel, but it was nowhere near warm enough to unpack our new mat and sit outside.

Dinner was a potato, bean and chorizo bake prepared by Jane.
